Projectile Motion Demos

Demos for next week on ch 3.

Shoot the Monkey

First, there is a shoot the monkey demo which was put togther by Darien last year. We've replaced the battery with power supply. Simply roll the cart out and plug in the power supply. It should power up to 15 Volts. The rest of the instructions are on the cart, but in brief,

  1. Open the monkeys bottom (not as nasty as it sounds) and turn on the sound effects.
  2. Hang the monkey from the magnet.
  3. Cock the dart gun and back up as far as possible.
  4. Aim at the lower part of the monkey and fire, making sure to hit the electric switch adjacent to the trigger.
  5. If you miss try again.
  6. Be sure to turn off the sound effects when done.

Inertial cart with ball launcher:

Have a student sit on the car and push down the launcher with ball loaded. He/she is supposed to catch the ball in the cup when it falls back down.

Now repeat after giving the student a push (constant velocity). Before hand ask students where the ball will land, i.e. in front of the cart or behand the cart. The student again has to catch the ball.

Videos:

There are a number of nice videos reiterating these same ideas.

Ch 1-3, 5-6, and 8 are quite nice. Ch 8 is relative motion.
