Magnetism Demos 1: "Permenant" Magnets --------------------------------------- Equipment: Large compass needle with stand 2 bar magnets 1 horseshoe magnet lucite encased suspended filings Demo 1: North and south poles: The bar magnets have N and S poles color coded. Use them with the magnet to show like poles repelling, unlike poles attracting, and the direction of magnetic north. Identify the north and south poles of the horseshoe magnet. Show that either pole is attracted to iron. Applications: refrigierator magnets, pole pieces of small motors, compasses, ... Demo 2: Magnetic field lines: Shake the lucite plate and place it on an overhead projector. Place a bar magnet or a horseshoe magnet on it. The filings will form lines along the magnetic field lines.
