Medical Complications

Medical Complications - Principally those that result from repeated vomiting:

Irregular heartbeat
Tears in the esophagus
Hiatal hernias
Scars on the back of the hands (from using the hand to induce vomiting)
Dental problems, such as damaged tooth enamel, numerous cavities, tooth loss, and/or severe gum disease
Dizziness, fainting, complaints of fatigue, muscle aches and sore throats
More serious complications if bulimia is left untreated include dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, progressive kidney failure, reverse peristalsis
Complications of laxative abuse

People suffering with Bulimia usually resemble anorectics in their obsession with food and weight and fear of becoming fat. They may lose some weight, but do not usually fall below a minimally normal weight. It is sometimes easy to miss the diagnosis because the person's appearance may not change noticeably.
