About Northeastern Hillel

Jewish life is an active, vibrant part of the Northeastern scene. Jewish students of every background comprise 7 percent of the Northeastern population and are involved in - and lead - many types of community service, recreational, social, and religious activities. Northeastern offers a minor in Jewish Studies. Students are able to take courses on campus or at Hebrew College in nearby Newton. There is also a study abroad program with Tel Aviv University through the Overseas Department.

The Northeastern University Hillel is the locus of Jewish student life on campus. In December 2000, Hillel moved into a fully refurbished home in a lovely brownstone on St. Stephen Street, adjacent to the heart of campus. Since then, the number of students involved in Hillel programs has doubled as they take advantage of the sanctuary, two kosher kitchens, lounge, library, and big-screen television. We urge all incoming and current students to join us for meals, services, and programs throughout the year.

Services and holiday celebrations

The Hillel House offers Friday night services every week, followed by Kiddush and dinner. On Saturday the students have Shabbat morning services and weekly Torah study. Guest speakers frequently lead lively discussion on Jewish history, culture, music, and politics. Hillel also holds holiday services and celebrations throughout the year. During Passover, Hillel hosts two community Seders and kosher for Passover meals are available all week (we are developing a year-round kosher meal plan in conjunction with Northeastern's food services). On other holidays, like Simchat Torah and Purim, we visit other synagogues or Hillels in the area for larger celebrations. The sanctuary in our new building is a comfortable place for services, discussions, and quiet contemplation.

Community service and advocacy

Jewish students at Northeastern have myriad opportunities to have fun together while helping such places as homeless shelters, elderly neighbors, and needy people as far away as El Salvador. During Thanksgiving week, we participate in the PBJam, joining Northeastern fraternities, sororities, and residence halls to make hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for delivery to food pantries in Boston. Before Purim, we make hamentashen with the elderly residents at the nearly Symphony West Apartments, and join them for a Passover program as well. A Hillel team raises money for Project Bread by walking twenty miles in the annual Walk for Hunger, and we participate in Northeastern's Spring into Action – a week-long series of social service activities and events. Last year, ten Hillel students went to El Salvador as part of the American Jewish World Service alternative spring break. They helped the village of Ciudad Romero by cultiating, laying building foundations, and constructing greenhouses and a park.

Northeastern Hillel hosts the annual Jewish Community Expo, a large regional event that showcases over seventy-five vendors and organizations from around the East Coast, including graduate and Israel programs, attended by several hundred interested students. On campus, students from Hillel are creating a new student organization to advocate for Israel. The Hillel staff works with the co-op division to arrange working situations in Israel and year-abroad programs. Around the corner and around the world, Northeastern's Jewish students are active and engaged.

Social and recreational activities

When you need a break from classes and studying, you can drop in at the Hillel House to hang out in the lounge, shoot some pool, watch a game on our big-screen TV, or find friends in our library. Hillel hosts games nights, a Hanukkah party, and outings to Red Sox and Patriots games, the Omni Theater, Duck Tours, and other events around Boston. We also gather with other Hillels in the region for several events during the year, including the city-wide Felafel Ball (the pre-Ball party for Northeastern students is an event not to be missed). The Hillel board goes on an annual leadership development retreat to increase their capacity for leading the organization and we are always looking for more ideas, input, and better ways to serve the University's Jewish population.

Jewish studies minor

The Jewish Studies Program provides undergraduates with the opportunity to explore the culture and religion of the Jewish people and investigate the impact of Jewish thought and belief on civilization. The interdisciplinary program offers courses in history, literature, music, political science, religion, and sociology. A cooperative arrangement with Hebrew College allows students to take specialize courses in Judaic subjects and apply the credits to the minor. Students may also take course in Israel at Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, or Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Coursework includes American Jewish History, The Jewish Novel, and Responses to the Holocaust, and an additional senior-level course that requires a major research project. In all, the minor requires at least seven courses at Northeastern or the affiliated institutions.

Albert S. Frager Jewish Student Center

Less than two years old, Northeastern's Hillel House is the busy center of Jewish life on campus. The facility boasts two lounges with a pool table and big-screen TV, two kosher kitchens and a dining hall, a sanctuary, student administrative space including five new computers with high-speed internet access, and two double apartments on the third floor. You can always find someone to talk with at our "Shmooze and Nosh" program on Saturday mornings and many students find that our extensive Judaica library is the perfect place for quiet study. We welcome Jews of every background and denomination in an open and free exchange of thoughts and ideas, and we urge every Jew on campus to get involved to make the Hillel house a vibrant home away from home.
