Practicum
and Internship Requirements
Competency standards for practicum and internship are consistent with the Massachusetts Department of Education and National Association
of School Psychology guidelines. In both field experiences, three contacts occcur between the
university supervisor and the field supervisor for the purpose of discussing the student's progress.
Prior to beginning the practicum, students must pass the Massachusetts Test
for Educator Licensure. Students are required to complete a minimum of 600
hours of field experience in school psychology in the second year to satisfy
the practicum requirement. In order to comply with National Association of
School Psychologists' standards, students must complete a total of at least
1200 hours of internship experience (at least 600 hours in a school setting)
after completion of all course and fieldwork requirements. Internship and
fieldwork opportunities are available in numerous area school systems and
clinics, which offer a variety of school psychological services. A detailed
listing of various internship/fieldwork sites is available from the program's training director. After the practicum and internship fair, which occurs during the winter, students are
required to schedule interviews with prospective supervisors. Although some sites are accessible via mass transit, other sites may be more easily accessible by car.
