Postdoctoral Research Associate
Postdoctoral openings are available in the identification of natural products and metabolites, using an LC-MS-NMR approach of offline NMR analysis of fractions collected during LC-MS (2). The NMR analysis is on a 700 MHz microcoil with an automated sample-loading system (Protasis “One-Minute NMR”). An immediate opening is in a microbiology program to identify the chemical co-dependencies of the 98% of the oral microbiome that has been previously uncultivable (3). The workflow and training will combine elements of bioassay-guided fractionation with metabolomics. This position offers opportunities to integrate prior NMR experience with other methods in the analysis of complex biofluids. We seek candidates with experience in small-molecule NMR data acquisition, processing, and interpretation; and interest in learning microcoil NMR methods. Experience with automation system, with de novo structure determination, and with compound databases or spectral libraries are a plus. Instrumentation development of microcoil hardware and methods, including droplet microfluidics, is also an ongoing activity. Interested candidates should send a resume with a cover letter describing experience, interests and goals; and names of 3 references, to Roger Kautz ( rkautz2008 [at] neu.edu; subject Postdoctoral Position)or by mail to 341 Mugar Hall, Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Ave., Boston MA 02115. The Barnett Institute, in Northeastern University (Boston, MA), is an internationally-recognized interdisciplinary center of excellence in chemical analysis (4). Its missions are to provide training and to develop new analytical methods through collaborative research programs. A recent focus is regulatory analysis, in an understanding with the FDA. Its NMR Facility, in addition to development work in microscale NMR, operates as a contract research organization for academic, industrial, and government collaborators, providing its trainees excellent opportunities to see, select, and prepare for jobs in these sectors. For more information about the programs and the Institute see: nuweb2.neu.edu/barnett/KautzRG/kautz.htm Northeastern University is an equal-opportunity employer.
