Brian Whitman is not the strongest, fastest or flashiest player on the field, but he makes plays and is a leader. Coach Gallup describes him as the "quarterback of the defense," a reputation Whitman has earned in three years as a starter. His leadership will be especially important due to the departure of defensive captain Steve Kives. Along with Brian Hayden, Whitman is regarded as the most consistent of the Husky defenders. 1998: Led team in tackles with 102, 45 of them unassisted and eight for losses...also had team-high seven pass breakups...tallied career-high 15 tackles at Maine... recorded team-high 11 tackles and had interception to end New Hampshire's final drive in 35-28 win Oct. 17...had team-high six double-figure tackle games. 1997: Total of four interceptions was good for second on the team and sixth in the Atlantic 10...returned a pickoff 35 yards for first career TD in NU's 34-19 win over UNH...made season-high eight tackles at Boston University...had seven stops versus James Madison and Delaware...third-quarter interception at the five-yard line put a stop to a potential Maine scoring drive and helped set up the game-ending Husky heroics. 1996: Started as true freshman...first career interception sealed win over Maine in season openerÉmade eight tackles and had pickoff versus William & MaryÉcareer-best 10 stops came versus UNH in season finale.
