There is no replacement for experience, especially at a position like quarterback, and Fred Vallett has the most of any Husky. In his first season he passed for an NU-record 22 touchdowns and proved to himself and everyone else that he was ready to compete when his chance came. He is a true competitor and will be contesting Jason Quinlan for the starting role this season. 1998: Starting quarterback for the last 10 games...completed 176 of 313 passes for 2292 yards, the second-best season total in NU history...threw 22 touchdown passes, breaking Ralph Barone's Husky mark of 20 set in 1992...connected on 16 of 26 attempts for 231 yards and four TDs against Lafayette, becoming first Husky ever to throw four TD passes in their quarterback debut...hit on 14 of 18 for 253 yards and five touchdowns at New Hampshire, falling one short of Barone's game mark for TD passes...hit Dave Klemic for two TDs in two-minute span to lead fourth quarter comeback against Rhode Island...hooked up with Klemic on 95-yard play at James Madison, matching the longest TD pass in school history...29th in the nation for pass efficiency (132.63)...Atlantic 10 All-Academic. 1997: Spent the season as an understudy to record-setting QB Jim Murphy. 1996: Served as a backup quarterback and holder. 1995: Redshirt season.
