The Huskies' 1998 Offensive Rookie of the Year, L.J. McKanas delighted everyone last season with his breakthrough rushing performance. He shattered the NU rookie record by almost 100 yards and did it despite missing two and a half games to a dislocated toe. He finished off last season as the seventh-leading rusher in the conference in just his redshirt freshman season. McKanas is a preseason second team All-A10 pick. 1998: Starting tailback...led the team in rushing with 832 yards, breaking the team's rookie record of 745 set by Gary Benoit in 1982...averaged 92.4 yards a game...ran for 104 yards Sept. 5 against New Hampshire, becoming first Husky in history to top the century mark in his debut...rushed for career-high 152 yards at UNH...named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week twice...rushed for 139 yards and one TD against James Madison...had five 100-plus yard games, most ever by an NU rookie...a very productive back; tackled for loss on just six of his 187 carries. 1997: Redshirt season.
